Cross-stitch came to America from Europe and quickly became part of what every girl was required to learn. The most popular form was a sampler: a piece of embroidered fabric that cross-stitching to illustrate alphabets and numbers as well as houses, flowers, and even people. Stitchers often created their own motifs that would repeat in the pattern.
