Is Westport Museum the same as Westport Historical Society?

Westport Historical Society, Inc. is the name of the legal nonprofit entity that does business under the name Westport Museum for History & Culture

How is the Westport Museum funded?

The Westport Museum is an independent nonprofit organization funded through private donations, memberships, sponsorships, program revenue, and competitive grants. There is no public funding for staffing, operations, or administrative expenses.

Don’t my tax dollars fund the museum—like the Westport Library, Earth Place or the Senior Center?

No. Unlike town-run services such as the library or senior center, the Westport Museum does not receive tax dollars. The museum is privately supported and relies on individual and institutional donors to remain open.

Does the museum receive any government funding at all?

The museum may apply for projectbased grants from organizations such as CT Humanities or the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). These grants are competitive, not guaranteed, and restricted to specific projects. They cannot be used for operations, salaries, or administrative costs.

What happens if the museum doesn’t receive enough private funding?

Without private support, the museum cannot operate. Donations directly fund exhibitions, educational programs, staff, collections care, and public access. Every program visitors experience is made possible by private giving.

I’ve never been to the museum. What is there to do?

The museum offers rotating exhibitions, talks, performances, handson programs, and community conversations that explore Westport’s history and culture—and connect it to the present day.

Is the museum a good place for kids and families?

Yes. The museum offers familyfriendly exhibitions, creative workshops, school programs, and seasonal activities designed to encourage curiosity, creativity, and handson learning for children of all ages.

Can anyone use the museum grounds?

Yes. The museum grounds are open to the public during daylight hours. Visitors are welcome to walk, sit,and enjoy the space, and are asked to be respectful of the property and any programs or events taking place.

Can I bring my dog to the museum?

Only service animals are permitted on museum property. Service animal handlers must keep animals under control at all times and are required to clean up after them.

Can I rent the museum or its grounds for a private event?Yes! The Westport Museum offers limited rental opportunities for private events that align with the museum’s mission and schedule. Rental fees directly support the museum’s nonprofit operations and public programs. Availability, capacity, and guidelines apply—please contact the museum for details.

I heard the Museum received a very large private donation a few years ago. Why do you still need donations?
Several years ago, the Museum was fortunate to receive a major gift from a private trust. Those funds were primarily designated for capital improvements, including the preservation of our historic barn and gardens at our National Register site, as well as discrete marketing initiatives and architectural surveys of Wheeler House to inform future restoration. A portion of the gift was used for operations, but restricted funds cannot support the Museum’s ongoing needs. Because we are not tax funded, annual donations from our community remain essential to sustaining our exhibitions, educational programs, collections care, and day-to-day operations.
