Internships

Are you a student interested in a hands-on learning experience? Join our internship program that supports a number of functions including program research and development opportunities. Our unpaid internship also gives you an opportunity to work with the Westport Museum’s extensive collections which include archives, objects, costumes, and art. 

With this internship, you can expect 5-20 hours of work per week during the Summer (June-August), Fall (September-December) or Winter/Spring (January-May) period. Specific schedules are crafted with internship candidates upon acceptance to our internship program. Applications for our Winter 2024 Internship are due on December 1, 2024.

Programs & Education Associate

We are seeking a passionate and dynamic Programs & Education Associate to join our team. The successful candidate will work closely with the Programs Director to curate and implement programs and exhibits, conduct outreach to the media and public for events, assist in collections management, manage volunteers and interns, conduct walking tours, and oversee the museum’s website listings. 

Responsibilities: 

  • Work with the Assistant Director to curate and implement engaging programs and exhibit interactives 
  • Assist with outreach to the partners and educators to promote museum programs and educational initiatives 
  • Assist in collections management, including cataloging objects, textiles, art, and other artifacts 
  • Manage volunteers and interns, providing guidance and support as needed 
  • Conduct walking tours and educational programs for visitors of all ages 
  • Maintain the museum’s website program and event listings 
  • Other duties as assigned to support the museum’s mission and goals 
  • Reports to the Assistant Director

Requirements: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in history, museum studies, education, or a related field 
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) 
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal 
  • Personable and enthusiastic, with a passion for history and/or museums 
  • Ability to engage the public and collaborate effectively with colleagues 
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail 
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team 
  • Experience in K-12 education is a plus 

Working Environment: 

  • Physical demands associated with this position include extended periods of walking and standing during programs and events 
  • Occasional lifting and carrying heavy weighted materials (up to 50 lbs) 
  • Ability to work in mild weather conditions (i.e. rain, heat, etc.) 

Employment Details: 

  • Employment Type: Full Time (35 hours per week, occasional evening and weekend hours) 
  • Salary: $40-45,000 annually 
  • Location: Westport, Connecticut
