Discover the once-erased history of African Americans in Westport by delving into items from and relating to the museums award–winning 2018/9 exhibition Remembered: The History of African Americans in Westport. See how historians use documents such as slave deeds and probate records in which enslaved people were listed as assets, in order to piece together the often-hidden existence of enslaved peoples in Westport. View purchase receipts for human beings sold at markets to families who would later have streets and neighborhoods named after them. Learn about the past of Black Americans on order connect recent events with long-established systemic racial inequality in the United States.
Tuesday Treasures is a Westport Museum programming series showcasing objects from the collection not normally on public view. See and hear the stories behind some of the most unique, mysterious and impactful artifacts in our community.
