DESCRIPTION:Ages 8 and Up  \n\n\n\nButter is something you probably eat every day. You might spread it on your toast or melt it over your popcorn\, but did you know that you can make it with just one ingredient and some elbow grease? If you’ve never tasted fresh homemade butter\, this is your chance. You may never go back to the supermarket for it again!    \n\n\n\nLearn how to churn butter by hand and make sweet or salted butter to take home. Discover some of the history of butter and how 18th Century Americans created different flavors to use in both sweet and savory recipes. They even used salted butter as a form of payment.  Learn about early American recipes\, like colonial Fairy Butter and why some early Americans believed in ‘bewitched’ butter and what they did about it! All materials supplied by the Museum.   \n\n\n\nLearn how to churn butter by hand and make sweet or salted butter to take home. DESCRIPTION:Ages 8 and up\, Reservation required \n\n\n\nSchools are bringing cursive back! It’s how we wrote for centuries but many young people never learned it. Across the country\, there is a new movement to reclaim it and teach it. Cursive is more than just an art. Learning it helps strengthen fine motor skills\, improves memory\, and helps kids process information faster. Writing in cursive actually activates neural pathways connected to both memory and language. It trains the brain to recognize letter patterns in a way which boosts spelling and reading. Using cursive can even help kids generate more ideas and help them better understand what they are learning.  \n\n\n\nSo come and get into the flow! Join culinary historian Karima Moyer-Nocchi for insights from her book\, The Epic History of Macaroni and Cheese from Ancient Rome to Modern America\, tracing the dish’s story across centuries of colonization\, migration\, labor\, industry\, race\, class\, and identity. \n\n\n\nThe event begins at Capuli restaurant\, where mac and cheese and a thoughtfully paired white wine will be served\, followed by a curator-led tour at the Westport Museum for History and Culture. \n\n\n\nA registration fee of $20 includes food\, wine\, and tour. \n\n\n\nAbout the Instructor\n\n\n\nKarima Moyer-Nocchi is a culinary historian and professor at the University of Siena in Italy. She is author of the book Chewing the Fat: An Oral History of Italian Foodways from Fascism to Dolce Vita and The Eternal Table: A Cultural History of Food in Rome. In preparation for her latest book\, The Epic History of Macaroni and Cheese: From Ancient Rome to Modern America\, she was awarded fellowships at the International Center for Jefferson Studies\, the Smithsonian Institution\, and the George Washington Presidential Library in Mount Vernon. Pickling is a historic way of preserving food to keep it from spoiling. Throughout history\, cooks rich and poor pickled vegetables and fruit to have food all year long. Quick refrigerator pickles use only vinegar\, sugar\, salt\, and your favorite flavorings.  They don’t require a lot of ingredients or complicated know-how and can be kept in the refrigerator for your next picnic!   \n\n\n\nLearn how to make quick refrigerator pickles using just a few simple ingredients. Discover some of the history and the science behind pickling and take home a jar you have made. You will even be able to create your own logo to put on your jar. It’s just sewing stitches in the form of Xs. Cross-stitch came to America from Europe and quickly became part of what every girl was required to learn. The most popular form was a sampler: a piece of embroidered fabric that cross-stitching to illustrate alphabets and numbers as well as houses\, flowers\, and even people. Stitchers often created their own motifs that would repeat in the pattern.   \n\n\n\nLearn all about American cross-stitch\, see some samplers\, and learn how to cross stitch a picture yourself!
