WHS presentation to the Historic District Commission to install a plaque commemorating the contribution of African American Westporters to the town.
Please come out to support us as Executive Director, Ramin Ganeshram presents a proposal to ask the town to install a commemorative plaque in the new parking lot behind Bedford Square and the Main Street Shops. The plaque will, ideally, be in the vicinity of 22 1/2 Main Street, the boarding house which catered to African American Westporters, many of whom came to the town as part of the Great Migration. The proposed memorial will pay homage to the lives and contributions of African Americans who were integral to building what would become the town of Westport, as enslaved people in the 18th century all the way through to present day.
