Musicians of a certain age will perform music of a certain vintage when the Connecticut-based Frank Porto Band performs tunes from the Big Band Era and the Great American Songbook. The Sheffer Gallery will swing to the sounds of the Tommy Dorsey band, Frank Sinatra, the McGuire Sisters and more recent songs from the Broadway hit “Jersey Boys”. Some of the songs patrons can look forward to hearing are “Nice ‘n’ Easy”, “Sugartime”, “Just a Gigolo” and “Singin’ in the Rain”.
The Porto Band features the piano, bass, drums, sax trumpet and vocals under the leadership of Ed Bednarski, who plays both saxophone and clarinet. The all-male ensemble have been playing together for some 30 years. Porto, the owner of a Bridgeport recording studio and a well-known accordion teacher, led the band until his death in 2006. All of the arrangements are by Mr. Bednarski, who played in the US Army Band and later studied with Bill Finegan who arranged music for Glenn Miller and Tommy Dorsey.
