Deetz will discuss her book delving into the lives of African American Southern plantation cooks from enslavement through emancipation and beyond as free people. Bound to the Fire not only uncovers their rich and complex stories and illuminates their role in plantation culture at large, but it celebrates their living legacy with the recipes that they created and passed down to future generations.
