Saunday, September 26th
The Westport Historical Society (WHS) has planned its “After Dark Lantern Tour” to be fun for the whole family, and instead of a bagful of sweets, participants come away with a lantern-and lots of interesting Westport lore. (Goodies will not be neglected, as refreshments will be served , accompanied by eerie music.)
The popular annual event is slated for Sunday, Oct. 26, from 4 p.m. until dusk. Gathering point is the Lower Green’s Farms Cemetery, located at the southeasterly corner of the intersection of Sherwood Island Connector with Green’s Farms Road.
Tour host Peter Jennings has real stories about the historically important people buried there, many of whose names may still be reflected in Westport street and area names. The theme this year is the Civil War, and stories will focus on Westporters involved in that conflict. Working with Peter (in authentic costumes) will be local Civil War buffs Jeff Mayer and David Price. The program is also sponsored by the Harding Funeral Home and BNY Mellon.
To help in the planning, the WHS requests a call for reservations at 222-1424. However, those without reservations are welcomed. Admission contribution is $5 each; $15 for a family of four.
For families interested in learning more about Westport’s old cemeteries , the book “Buried in Our Past ” about local burial grounds, will be available for purchase at $5 a copy.
