276 Main St.

Sarah and Chris Ahlgrim are honoring Westport’s heritage by displaying a Westport Historical Society plaque identifying their 276 Main St. home as the Patrick Rice House which Rice built in 1870. Over the years, several well known Westport families owned the Italianate house, including the Coley, Staples, Gray, Sherwood and Taylor families. Julia H. Haggeman, well known for writing articles for local newspapers about Westport’s history, was the owner from 1941 to 1960. The Ahlgrims purchased the house in 1999 because they fell in love with the house’s molding, high ceilings and character which they said reminded them of the architecture of brownstones in Brooklyn, N.Y., where they previously lived, and some homes in Europe. The house is currently on the market.  Bob Weingarten for WestportNow.com
