There are many areas of WHS that rely completely on volunteer help and commitment to provide the services that make WHS one of Westport’s gems. If you are interested in any of these opportunities, please call WHS at (203) 222-1424 and give your name, phone number, and area where you’d like to volunteer.

Fall 2017 Opportunities

Taking a field trip to the Westport Historical Society introduces every Westport 3rd grader to the historical riches and wonders of our town. Our 2017 program, Exploring Westport History at the Wheeler House, offers students and teachers an opportunity to interact with real objects from the past, engage the senses, bring curriculum concepts to life, and inspire questions.

The interactive tour will occur during the last week of September and the first two weeks of October; a final schedule will be forwarded to docents as the tour dates approach. Docents are expected to be present each morning at 8:30 until 12:30 to facilitate the tour.

During the field trip, each class will be divided into three groups that will rotate through three learning centers, each for 15-20 minutes. There will be an average of 23 students per class plus teachers and chaperones. Teachers and parent volunteers, who will serve as chaperones, will join each group. Adults are expected to assist WHS staff with supervision and remain with their group at all times.

WHS guides or docents will lead the centers. They will be trained on the local history and curriculum links of each center and in inquiry-based learning and use of prompts to facilitate discussion within the student groups about what they observe. Guides will follow the model of Westport Public Schools “Centers”, with focused activity and prompts/questions to consider on each topic.

The award winning programming at the Westport Historical Society is only possible with the help of committed volunteers. If you are interested in being a part of this award winning team or have questions about the docent position please contact Nicole Carpenter, WHS Education and Program Director.

Front Door Greeters

Volunteers work in the mornings, 10-1, or afternoons, 1-4, weekly or once a month. At the front desk volunteers will be responsible for greeting all visitors, responding to phone calls, leading tours, and helping staff with everyday projects.

Education Department

Educational programs are happening constantly at WHS. Consider helping with a house tour, History on Wheels classroom visits, or lending a hand with a weekend program.

Costume Department

Our Costume Committee could use help going through our large collection to categorize items so that dresses and other costumes can be used in exhibit displays and programs. Contact WHS to arrange a time when volunteers and committee members can meet together when convenient.

Archives Department

The Archives Department meets every Monday morning, from 10-12 to research questions that have been asked via phone, e-mail, or in-person for information about families, houses, events, and general Westport history; as well as cataloging items or collections that are donated to the WHS.
