Summer internships at the Westport Historical Society allow students to get a sneak peek into the inter-workings of a history museum while earning course credit. Interns will engage in hands-on projects, fieldtrips and learn about the museum field. Join us for a summer centered on unlocking history!

2017 Education and Programming

June 26th – August 25th, Monday – Friday, 9am – 2pm

Course credit available

WHS is an educational organization that focuses on making history accessible for all audiences. Westport has a large number of families; children are a large part of the community. Summer camp at WHS aims to create lasting connections to history that will inspire a life-time love for learning about the past.

The summer camp assistant will support the Education Department in planning and implementing camp. Additionally they will help with posting on social media about daily camp activities, including trips around Westport and other site visits.

Qualifications

  • Experience working with children
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment
  • Knowledge of social media platforms: Facebook, and Instagram

 

2017 House History

June 27th – August 25th, Tuesday – Friday, 9am – 2pm

Course credit available

Supervisor: Education and Programs Director

WHS is located at the Wheeler Bradley house, an 18th century home with a rich past. The stories of these families and the house itself can always be expanded to provide visitors with a stronger connection to the past.

Over the summer the intern will complete in-depth research including subjects such as: the families who lived in the house, inventories of the house, census records, servants and/or slaves, the original layout of the house and blueprints.

Qualifications

  • Experience in research techniques
  • Attention to detail
  • Excellent written and verbal skills
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office products

 

 2017 Archives Collections

Dates and times to be determined with Supervisors, Monday – Friday

Supervisors: Co-Chairs of the Archives Comittee

The WHS Archives climate-controlled vault contains collections of papers and documents on all areas of Westport history: maps, photographs, family histories, house histories, and much more.

The intern will assist collection volunteers with various projects relating to WHS collections, including; digitization, condition reports, organization, and database entry.

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of library filing system
  • Experience in digitization of collections
  • Attention to detail
  • Artifact handling experience
  • Knowledge of social media platforms: Facebook, and Instagram
