February 18th, 2014 until February 20th, 2014
10:00 am - 2:00 pm
Kids who like to draw and paint will have the chance to brush up on their skills during our three-day February vacation break workshop. The program, for ages 5 to 12, running from Tuesday, Feb 18 to Thursday, Feb 20 will be “our own little Famous Artists School,” said Elizabeth DeVoll, the Westport Historical Society’s Education Director.
DeVoll said the children will each receive their own sketchbooks in which to practice cartooning and drawing each day. They will get a chance to see and use the actual assignment notebooks form The Famous Artists School,
They will also discover some of the Westport Library’s collection of clip art from magazines and newspapers of past generations used as visual reference material by the actual artists.
The children will tour the Historical Society’s latest exhibit of New Yorker magazine covers by Westport artists and then create their own magazine covers. There will also be a walking tour to view Edmund M. Ashes, Jr’s salvaged mural in Banana Republic, as well as one to the west bank of the Saugatuck river to see the original home of the Famous Artists School.
Back by popular demand, Jenn Devine will visit each day to lead us in fun and active dramatic play. On the last day, an accomplished Westport illustrator will visit, talk with the children about their illustrations, look at our notebooks and maybe even make a suggestion or two on how to improve.
The Famous Artists School was launched during the “Golden Age” of American illustration when Westport was a mecca for commercial artists. The founders included Norman Rockwell and Westport illustrators Albert Dorne, Harold von Schmidt and Stevan Dohanos. Students received monthly assignments, which they mailed back to be critiqued by the school’s faculty artists. In 1981, the school was purchased by Cortina Learning International and subsequently relocated to Cortina’s headquarters in Wilton.
