Spring break is a time to kick back, have fun and enjoy the onset of warm weather. At the WHS, kids can do all of these things, but with a retro twist – doing them the way kids did 100 years ago.
April 16 through 18, kids can come to the Historical Society and play old-time outdoor games, design folk-art wall hangings, and create art from vintage Westport postcards and stamps. There will also be a downtown history walk where they will learn about late 19th century Westport and the merchants who relied on the Saugatuck River to ship produce and other goods to buyers in New York and Boston.
Kids who like to cook can learn how to whip up an old-fashioned pound cake. Those with a green thumb can plant heritage bulbs in keepsake containers, and those with an ear for nature’s music can string wind chimes using cookie cutters.
But not all the activities come from a bygone era. The children will also build robots from recycled products and even learn a Zumba routine and how to Hoola Hoop. Lunch on the final day will feature every kid’s favorite food, pizza.
